Thalanad Grama Panchayat - Institutional History

The Development Journey and Historical Memories of the Region

Origins and Background

Thalanad is a hilly village located in Meenachil Taluk of Kottayam District and under the Erattupetta Block. Situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats, the region was formerly part of the erstwhile Travancore administrative territory. Thalanad has a history of migration of hardworking farming communities. Earlier generations played a significant role in transforming this land into the fertile region it is today, overcoming the challenges posed by wildlife and the natural environment.

Formation of the Grama Panchayat

Thalanad Grama Panchayat was formed as part of the efforts to strengthen the local self-government system. Before its formation, the area was included within the administrative boundaries of neighbouring regions. The establishment of an independent administrative centre provided significant momentum to development activities. Progress in the agricultural sector, construction of roads, and advancements in education and healthcare were made possible through the Panchayat's local governance system.
