Geography of Talanad Grama Panchayat

Talanad Grama Panchayat is a highland rural local body situated in Meenachil Taluk of Kottayam District, Kerala. Being part of the Western Ghats mountain range, the region lies at an elevation of approximately 600 to 1,200 metres (2,000–4,000 feet) above sea level. The area is characterized by a picturesque landscape comprising hills, valleys, small rivers, and streams.

The eastern boundary of Talanad is connected to the higher hill regions of Idukki District. It shares boundaries with Teekoy and Poonjar on the west, the Vagamon region on the north, and various villages of Idukki District on the south. A major portion of the Panchayat consists of hill slopes, forest areas, and agricultural lands.

The climate of the region is generally moderate and pleasant. Due to the influence of both the Southwest Monsoon and the Northeast Monsoon, the area receives comparatively high annual rainfall. Agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy, with major crops including rubber, pepper, cardamom, coffee, and coconut.

The rich biodiversity of its forests, clean air, natural water resources, and stunning mountain vistas are among the key geographical features of Talanad. However, as a highland region, certain areas are also vulnerable to environmental challenges such as soil erosion and landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Talanad's unique combination of natural beauty, ecological richness, and agricultural potential makes it one of the notable highland regions of Kottayam District. 🌿🏔️
